Artist Statement

Photography for me is a form of communication relative to the experiences that I have.  A photograph conveys so much more than words possibly can.  Photography is a visceral medium with so much more power than any other artistic expression!  This Art form made an impression on me in the beginning of my affair with it because of the requirement to use chemicals, time, and technique to slowly coax the image from the cellulose frames.  My initial experience and training with photography was before the days of digital imagery.  The photographic processing experience was and still is akin to sorcery in my opinion.  You can give several technicians or artisans the exact same negative in the same darkroom, same chemicals, equipment etc. and you will invariably achieve different results when the paper dries and is brought out into the light for viewing.  I long for the times that I am able to have this experience from time to time.
My subject matter is varied based on my mood and opportunity.  I believe that most photographers are opportunists at heart because even if we take the time to plan and stage a circumstance there will be some element that causes the capture to be an opportunity.  Maybe it’s the lighting that has changed ever so slightly or the focus that is in a different place.  There will be some element that is completely out of the control of the artist and becomes an element of opportunity.  This being said : one of my favorite elements is nature !  I enjoy capturing flowers and other organic nature with blemishes and unique character intact.  If a flower petal has a bug on it or chew holes or stains left behind by an insect, it is high on my interest radar.  I also enjoy capturing photos of humans caught in the human experience.  The human experience is relative and very personal to me as an artist.  A portrait that can be simple to someone else might have a significant meaning to me.  It might speak of aging or an activity or accomplishment in the human subjects’ life that will be remembered forever when the captured image is reviewed.  I feel an honor and a privilege to be able to be present when the moment happens and to have the permission to capture the moment for posterity.  I also enjoy capturing the human form as a fine art subject.  Coming from an extremely racist and homophobic Southern state in the United States, it is interesting and revealing to me to capture subjects that peel back the layers of these subjects in a manner that is likely taboo to most observers.  I explore these subjects in a forensic manner the way a medical examiner looks for clues in a case!  The presented image is intended to incite engagement, debate, discussion and even introspection sometimes from the viewer.  Emotions are elicited and often result in strong feelings about an image.  You’re welcome!
Educational
In the course of the photography process I enjoy the privilege and the honor of gaining an education about life, people, the process, and the way that life can be manipulated.  The final photograph that you are viewing at any given time is so much more than simply being in the right time and pulling the trigger to acquire what is before you.  In the case of objects, plants and the like there is often many times that the artist passes or examines the object many days before actually composing the image and capturing it.  During which time, change occurs.  The change can be in the form of wilt, growth or being eaten by an herbivore.  In the case of a human subject there is often a court-ship of sorts that occurs.  The artist is interested in a particular subject so contact is made.  The subject decides whether they would be interested in return to go forward with the artist.  The project is discussed as well as locations, dates and potential times.  Once all of the variables are worked out the “date” is in motion.  Once the two parties meet for the first time there is a chemical and energy exchange to see if the two can coexist and work together productively.  The session and the resulting images are a product of this chemical and energy connection.  When the connection is weak, the images show it clearly and are usually archived and never shown.  When the connection is strong, amazing images are produced and the artist can usually barely contain themselves to share with others.
Hopefully this little blurb provides a bit of insider information as to the reasoning behind the imagery that I capture and share.  Each image is to be viewed on its own as an individual work of art although I completely understand that some groups or images are digested as a group and judged as such…   Enjoy the visual feast !
          Compilations
Building Components to achieve the final image !  During this invigorating journey the artist, the subject and even the edit and com positioning process facilitate an education that would not otherwise be possible.  The meaning of life begins to come into perspective as one engages with subjects both animated and inanimate alike.  The stories begin to meld into a tapestry with its own life.  Take the time to examine each image and imagine the time of day, the warmth of the sun or the gentle breeze whirling by.  May Peace embrace you…

Announcing Zoe......
On July 27th this little angel came into the life of Mike and Kristine.  What a blessing indeed.  The announcement card below has been skillfully created by Kristine to announce their bundle of joy to the world.  As you can imagine 7 pounds, 7 ounces is long past and Zoe is on her way to ruling the roost.  You can check out mom's very talented graphic design website at    www.kncreativedesign.com

Point Loma Lighthouse !

This past weekend the opportunity availed itself to visit the inner workings of the Point Loma Lighthouse !  The location of this lighthouse appears to be at the optimum location.  It is at a very high vantage point at the mouth of one of the last bays on the South of the West Coast of the continental 48 states.  The only problem is that when the weather comes in off the ocean it blinds the light and causes it to become a hazard.  This oops became apparent immediately when this lighthouse went into service and ships routinely ran aground trying to navigate it.  Upon activation another lighthouse built at the bottom of the hill not so susceptible to the whims of the weather was designed and built to correct the error made by civil engineers for the government at the time.  The lighthouse was in use for about 30 years and has since been a landmark and used for snack shops, tea rooms and other non-essential purposes.  It is very beautiful and these images are my take-aways!

Monday

March ...........

What an incredible opportunity !  Recently the  opportunity presented itself to obtain a graphic novel co-written by Congressman John Lewis and based on his experience related to the March on Washington - 50 years ago !  Well, actually Congressman John Lewis was also on hand to sign the book, so it was a 2 for 1 opportunity.  I was jazzed to make my way to the front of the line and get my copy and shake Congressman John Lewis' hand.  The images below are from this day ..............

Erin and Jeremy called me out of the blue and let me know that they were having a simple, humble wedding in a not so glamorous location with not many people there, but they wanted to capture the moment without burdening anyone in their group.  I took the assignment because they are friends.  Let me just tell you there ceremony was totally glamorous and Erin stole the show with her amazing presence and gorgeous smile.  I am honored to be able to share this with you and feature the last session of 2012 of a couple that deserves it.  The way Jeremy looks into Erin’s eyes and gently takes her hand into his lets you know that they are destined for greatness together….. !  They are truly one of the most incredible couples I have ever had the pleasure of capturing.  I’ll stop rambling and let you just see them in action……..  Bon Foto !

THE BUNNY IS BACK !!!

Well.................. after a lot of soul searching and reflection Papi decided to come back to us and let everyone know that he is "out".  "Out" of his trusted beanie that is.  He had always seen himself as a bear since he was born in a ward surrounded by baby bears with similar furs and dressings.  It took me a while to explain that those cute little tighty whiteys while fashionable are not the normal attire for a bunny of his age.  So, we will be going to the haberdashery for bunnies of his age and acquiring some suitable styles.  Below is a photo taken of Papi on the beach in Santa Barbara just prior to sunset during a reflective moment.  As you can see the beanie is gone and he is gaining comfort and confidence with the ears that have been hiding under the beanie until now.  He wanted me to post this pic so that you could see that he has been taking care of himself and is in good spirits.  We will post some pics of his new rags once he figures out which style he wants to rock.

Wednesday

Ay La Ba !

I'm home dangit and lovin it. This little choo-choo is just a teaser of the images to come in future posts. Just imagine yourself riding this awesome street car with the Mississippi River rumbling and churning chocolate milk on one side of you and the world famous french market on the other as your chug down the track toward neighborhood unknown. Stay with me now - there will be more .............

Louisiana Live Oak ! This tree has been in my life for 40 + years and it was there long before i had it to lean on ! We have launched the boat near it and had a plenty of picnic under it. This was also the spot where we used to get some really nice snow balls during the annual church bazaar ! The spanish moss hanging from the branches always remind me of home. Our church is no longer there thanks to Hurricane Katrina, but the memories will always remain .........

This was the first family reunion that i had the opportunity to attend. This was July 1-3, 2005. I was able to see some of my folks that i havent seen in a long time. My father who is in this picture, is no longer with us, but he'll always be in my heart ! I think about him every day and wish he were still here to talk to me and so i could just throw hugs on him. I feel so fortunate to have been able to spend this special time with my family and some really close friends. During this holiday time i really feel nostalgic for the old holiday parties at Nano's house and my bartending duties ! :-)
Au Revoir - Mon Amis !

Lagunas Mountains

The setting is tranquil. The cabin is rich in history and charm !
Nestled near the top of the Lagunas Mountains East of San Diego, is this rustic cabin which hosts the Photo Club meeting every year and serves to set the soul free of many of the members while on this awesome journey into the wild !
I have gone several years and found the commune with nature to be priceless. These are just a few pix i have from these times.

My Hero

This is my dad. Herbert Malter. He is the guy that i look to for strength, support and guidance. I often wonder what the world would be like without great dads like mine. Who else would teach us how to fish, swim, trap and raise livestock? Every spring, we turned in the topsoil and set our furrows for the veggies yet to come and by the time we were studying up for finals, there was something on the stalk, vine or in the patch. I thought it was magic. I now understand that it was good planning an almanac and a heap of animal waste. Why, what else can make corn plants grow to 10 feet tall and okra the size of your little finger be the size of a banana by the time you get home from school. I would cringe when i arrived home from school and one of the hogs would be loose, terrorizing the neighborhood. My dad would tell me to put my school bags down, change my clothes and come on out to help get the hog back into the cage. It seemed as if they were waiting on me to do this chore. Well, they were. Once we achieved our goal, my dad would tell me over dinner that putting the hog back in the pen and securing it so he doesnt get out again was just part of being a responsible caretaker. He would also tell me to look back on this moment a year from now, when we were eating the bacon or the pork chops or roasts. The flavor would be that much sweeter ! He was so right. Apologies go out to my vegetarian friends. Trust me i spared you the details, but the story needed to be told. My dad also showed me compassion and caring by example. Whenever we'd pass someone in need, my dad would always go and talk to them and see what the issue was as well as give them some food or even some cash. When i'd ask why he always talks to those folks, he'd tell me "What harm is there in being nice to folks"? He also said "God doesnt like ugly and that he'd probably want us to help his children instead of making fun as we go by". Yes, i put my dad on a pedestal, but i still think he deserves it. Enough for now, but be warned, i have more...................that's for a later date ! :-)

Latino Film Festival San Diego 2009

Could life get any cooler? I dare to imagine......... This awesome film which was the 3rd top grossing film of all time in Columbia, beat out hits like Batman & such.. This film called "PARAISO TRAVEL", premiered in San Diego last night and the stars of the film as well as the director was here to boot. I feel so lucky to have been in the room with them. Then, they all jumped on the interview stage for this rare photo op. Life is good. The dashing gentleman on the left is Ethan Van Thillo, the Executive Director of the festival, next is Simon Brand, the director, Angelica Blandon, the female lead,Yolanda S. Walther-Meade, festival coordinator, Tony Dalton, one of the male leads.
This was truly a moment to be captured. Afterwards the film was screened to audience raves ! If you get a moment before the festival is over, i highly recommend you make time to go see this film. It will be shown a few more times before the festival is over. Who knows, you might just bump elbows with another star of Latino Cinema. Bienvenidos !!!!
